Gantry Crane

Overview

Gantry Cranes are also known as Portal Cranes. Gantry Cranes are divided into Standard Gantry Cranes, Semi Gantry Cranes and C-shaped Gantry Cranes. Semi-Gantry Cranes are designed with one leg while “Standard” Gantry Cranes are with two legs. Both Semi and Standard Gantry Cranes can be designed as single girder or double girder solutions and include cantilevers, all depending on the capacity, application, customer specifications and dimensional constraints.

Introduction

Need an extra hand in moving heavy loads at ease with better mobility in outdoor settings? You should consider Top Mech’s gantry cranes. They are versatile tools that are built with the ease of transportation in mind. As such, they make it easier for you to transport loads.

Let’s take a closer look at understanding the meaning of gantry cranes and how they can be beneficial in your daily work environment.

What is a gantry crane?

A gantry crane is a type of industrial crane with single or double girder solutions supported by freestanding legs that move on wheels or rail tracks carrying a bridge, trolley and hoist.

A gantry crane is typically used for outdoor applications. It doesn’t require to be tied into a building’s support structure, eliminating the need for support columns or permanent runway beams. This can result in better handling movement and is more cost-effective than conventional crane systems as it requires fewer support structures.

Larger gantry cranes are usually operated on a rail or track embedded in the ground, typically outlined in a straight line. Smaller portable gantry cranes, on the other hand, are operated on wheels and can be moved around a facility for a variety of light tasks or maintenance.

Types of gantry cranes

Just like overhead cranes, gantry cranes come in many different forms and sizes.

Standard Gantry Crane System

These are the most popular types of gantry cranes in the market and can often be found on construction sites for construction, furniture assembly, and even handling heavy loads. They consist of two legs that move on a straight rail on the ground. This design allows room for motorised equipment such as fork lifts, scissor lifts, trucks and carts to be placed underneath the legs.

Semi-Gantry Crane System

This type of crane system consists of one leg that moves on a rail while the other side of the crane has a runway system that is fixed to building columns or on the side of the wall in a building. This allows a crane operator to move the crane in a straight line, allowing for quicker, more precise movement and space to conduct maintenance or repairs.

Portable Gantry Crane System

These are smaller, lighter duty gantry cranes that are designed to be portable and quickly assembled on-site using a set of caster wheels or rubber wheels for ease of movement around a construction site or in a facility. They are also convenient in tight spaces or under an existing overhead bridge crane system. When they are not in use, they can be stored in their designated areas or anywhere in a facility to offer greater convenience and floor space flexibility.

How are gantry cranes used in the industry?

Gantry cranes come in different forms and sizes, designed to suit the specific purpose for which they are intended. The versatility of their design allows the end-user to choose which type of crane they need, whether it be a portable, semi-gantry or full gantry crane. They are commonly used for heavy fabrication applications or outdoor construction – rail yards, steel yards, shipping yards, industrial sites, warehouses, etc.

Portable gantry cranes are used for handling light loads. They are also designed to be portable and may be moved around the site for multiple tasks, such as aerial work platforms, debris removal, cleaning up, or moving equipment or materials to other areas.

Semi-gantry cranes are designed to handle heavier loads. They have a high lifting capacity and can work in a straight line, allowing for the positioning of heavy objects with much ease. Full gantry cranes are much heavier and often larger than the other two types. These are designed for carrying heavy loads or utilising large gantry arms for lifting heavy items such as cement, steel or concrete.

What are the benefits of gantry cranes?

The benefits of using a Top Mech gantry crane are numerous. They allow for more speed in working or quick and precise movement in tight spaces, typically occupying the same floor space as a standard overhead crane. In addition, gantry cranes are reliable and easy to use in various situations; they are usually mobile, which makes them ideal for quick, precise movements on site. Gantry cranes also require less maintenance than overhead cranes.

Uses of gantry cranes

The flexibility of gantry cranes makes them perfect for any type of project that requires heavy lifting or structural work.
